Dr Samuel Lagier is a scientist, science communication and public speaking expert. He trains and coaches experts throughout Switzerland to craft impactful talks (SamSpeaksScience.com). He also teaches improvisation and applied improvisation to individuals and corporate clients, and appears on stage with the improvised comedy group, The Renegade Saints (renegadesaints.ch).

Description

The workshop will include 2 days separated by a week.

The workshop will begin with each participant giving a brief 3-minute conference-style presentation of their work. The first day will focus on presentation design: different styles of story-arcs, structure, depth, and visualisations, specifically with a focus on presenting and discussing scientific data.

The second day of the workshop will focus on the performance and practice of the talk. How to hook and keep the audience ? How to be engaging in both voice and body language? Participants will learn to use specific verbal devices to communicate clearly in a memorable way. The workshop will close with each participant presenting her/his revised talk in front of a camera. Participants will receive feedback from the trainer and from their audience throughout the workshop.

At the end of the workshop, the participants will know how to :

  • structure a presentation
  • engage an audience
  • analyse a talk to learn from observations

What to bring

The participants need to bring a 3 minute presentation of their work, a maximum of 3 slides to illustrate that presentation, and a one sentence description of their work for a non-scientist.
